Darlow Lloyd (Construction) Ltd in partnership with Darlow Lloyd and Sons Ltd were engaged by Tata to demolish the redundant concrete Wharf Walls and High Line Bunkers. The Contract was placed on an ‘Open Book’ partnering basis with the challenge set by Tata to make the scheme self-funded through our companies various recycling technologies.

The site had been mothballed for some years but the high line bunkers still had valuable materials such as Coke, iron ore, Sinter and Tramp. The redundant structure was full of scrap metal externally and heavy mild steel reinforcement within the structure.

Through careful planning and developed recycling skills by our sister company, we successfully managed the demolition of the structure whilst maximising the reclaimable materials that added value to the scheme.
All concrete from the demolition works was sorted, crushed and processed on site into useful aggregate sizes that were then either reused by the Client on other construction projects or sold to the neighbouring A4241 Port Talbot Peripheral Distributor Road Stage 2.

There were many hazards encountered on site such as asbestos that required careful planning to facilitate removal and live services running through the site also required diversion, capping or removal during the project and DLC worked closely with Tata’s Civil and Structural department to ensure this went smoothly and not affect their production requirements.
