As part of the Blast furnace No4 rebuild project, DLC was successful with a competitive bid to Design and Build a new Sub-Station for the new electrical infrastructure required for the rebuild.
Skanska were appointed as Tata’s approved Civil and Structural Designers and work commenced on the new Sub-Station building and transformer pens. Site testing was carried out and the civil foundations changed from a piled foundation to a reinforced ground bearing raft.
DLC excavated and removed large amounts of the existing ground and imported fill from Tata’s HAA recycling operation to remediate the ground and provide an engineered Hardcore pad to receive the ground bearing raft.
The main structure consisted of a steel frame complete with Tata Trisomet Composite profiled panel wall and roof sheets, suspended concrete floors and internal fair faced dense concrete blockwork infill panels.
The Main transformer structures consisted of steel frames complete with single skin profiled panel roof sheets, double skinned pointed face brickwork walls and Palisade protection fencing and gates.
The secondary transformer structure consisted of load bearing face brickwork walls complete with integral reinforced concrete wind posts, steel framed removable roof sections and palisade gates.
Groundwork’s externally included access pathways around the building, access service ducting, storm soakaway drainage and landscaping works to the surrounding areas.
