Retaining Walls at Quarry Rd – Swansea

Client Private Developer
Project Construction of a retaining wall for land development.
Completion Date 12/2008
Contract Period 12 Weeks
Value £120k

The contract was awarded to DLC by a private developer wishing to expand land potential within a disused quarry for Housing. The scheme entailed mass excavation works, crushing and screening of the excavated materials for reuse and the design and construction of a 50m long x 5m high retaining wall.

The site had limited access which meant that material imports had to be kept to a minimum via on site screening and crushing services provided. DLC were able to reuse the bulk of the excavated materials on site in the backfilling operation, saving the client money.

The ground bearing reinforced retaining wall incorporated a drainage net on the back face together with a linear base drainage system to cope with the onsite water runoff. An additional side wall was also constructed to split level the site and segregate an existing building plot and maintain access.

The main challenge for the site was the mass excavation works where a battered slope of some 8Lm high was constructed to facilitate the safe construction of the retaining wall.
