Due to the new route of the proposed peripheral diversion road, phase 2, which crosses many parts of Corus Work’s redundant land, key live services had to be relocated in advance.

The main scheme involved trenching works directly through redundant heavy industrial foundations to divert the existing 600mm diameter water main, formation of temporary road diversions to maintain traffic flows, identification and protection of live services and apparatus and construction of a new carriageway to accommodate one section of the relocated service.

The main trenching works proved extremely difficult due to the vast redundant civil foundation and services that were encountered within the proposed route coupled with high water table levels. DLC introduced many cost innovations during the scheme such as recycling all the broken concrete foundations to use as backfill and alternative trench routes identified after extensive site investigation work. Traffic disruption on site was also kept to a minimum by constructing temporary road systems after close liaison with the Corus project team.

The success of this project was mainly due to our site personnel’s extensive knowledge of the Corus site, working procedures and co-operation with the Corus project team.
