The main scheme was the construction of a new By-pass for the A473 between Bridgend and Pontypridd. DLC were awarded civil packages under the Main Contractors NEC edition 3 Option C, to construct ground bearing road underpass foundations at Gwern-Y-Moel and cattle creep foundations at Nant Myddlin. The ground bearing foundations incorporated rebated keys in the top walls to receive the precast tunnel units for the underpass and steel corrugated arches for the cattle creeps. Upon installation of the pre-cast concrete/steel corrugated units, DLC completed the stitching, grouting and setting works prior to backfilling by others.
Working closely with the Costain team we were able to successfully complete the works within the contract period whilst catering for many design changes throughout the project due to site ground conditions. DLC revisited the project in the December of 2009 to assist the Main Contractor in the completion of other areas on an ‘open book’ basis.
